Thompsonville, Mich. - The Summer Sounds 2008 concert series opens Friday, July 11 at Michigan Legacy Art Park, Crystal Mountain, Thompsonville, with the ever popular Grand Traverse Pipes and Drums.  The concert begins at 7:00 p.m.

Grand Traverse Pipes and Drums, a regional favorite for 28 years, performs the haunting music of the Scottish Highlands and the rousing marches of the British army.  Dressed in kilts of Ancient Sutherland tartan, the Highlanders play the Great Highland Bagpipe and the Scottish snare drum, continuing a thousand-year tradition.  The Highlanders have been a favorite among Michigan Legacy Art Park (MLAP) concert guests for many years.

Led by Pipe Major Pete Deneen, assisted by Drum Sergeant Dave Schwartz, the band achieved international recognition playing in several North American championships.

Admission for the concert is $8 for adults and $5 for children and $20 for immediate families.  Some seating is available.  Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and picnics.  Rides are available for those who cannot walk the trails.  Prior to the concert, guests are encouraged to tour the Park and view some of the 40 works of art along the trails.  In the event of rain the concert will be held indoors at Crystal Mountain, signs will be posted.

The Summer Sounds concert series is funded by grants from the Dennos Museum Center, Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, Crystal Mountain and TV 9&10 News Helping Hands.  For further information, call (231) 378-4963.
